Chinese Ambassador to The Bahamas, Her Excellency Yan Jiarong recently held a press event where she spoke on trade between The Bahamas and China.
Imports from China into The Bahamas reached approximately $1.27 billion in 2024, a 158% increase from the year prior. Trade between China and Latin American countries has reached $518.4 billion. Jiarong said, “personally I’m not surprised by this increase. Because, you know, China has become, as I said, the largest trading partner for over 140 countries in the world and the total goods trade has ranked first in the world for the past seven consecutive years. So China has been ranked the first in terms of goods trade in the world for consecutive seven years and Chinese products are of high quality and low price and welcomed by people in various countries. And China ranks first in the world in terms of output for more than 40% of the world’s five hundred major industrial products.”
The Chinese Ambassador also spoke specifically to relations between The Bahamas and China highlighting the gift of the national stadium, which is currently under renovation. Jiarong also foreshadowed another gift that China will present to The Bahamas and gave an update on a loan the Bahamas government is seeking to complete a new hospital on New Providence.
“The Chinese government is now in the final stage of internal approval for the preferential loans to help Bahamas to build a new hospital in Nassau. So we will provide, definitely, we will provide this concessional loans to build this hospital. I think the final amount will be released once we have gone through the internal approval stage and signed the government framework agreement between our two governments.”
Diplomatic relations between The Bahamas and China began in May 1997.
