District Superintendent of Education for Grand Bahama and Bimini, Ivan Butler spoke to ZNS News commenting on violence in schools within his district.

He said, “the schools reflect what is happening in our communities. And so anytime there is an uptick in violence in the communities we see similar activity in our schools.”

Butler went further stating, “we want parents to know that our schools are safe. We have a safe school policy and plan in place to deal with any issues and we just encourage parents to be more involved in their children’s lives. Because many of the problems that we have in the schools are results of lack of parental guidance. And so we ensure our parents to be more involved in the lives of their children and thus we’ll have a better and safe school.”
