As obstacle racing takes a significant step onto the international sporting stage, The Bahamas’ Chickcharney Challenge is preparing to return to where it all began.The Chickcharney Challenge – Bush Party 2026 will take place on Saturday, September 26 at Clifton Heritage Park, bringing competitors back to the rugged bush, trails and coastline that hosted the event in its earliest years.Under the tagline “BUSH. BEACH. BRUSH. BE THERE!”, this year’s Challenge will feature more than 17 obstacles testing strength, endurance, balance, agility, grip and accuracy.The event comes at an important time for obstacle sports globally.
In August, the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) officially became the sole international governing body for the global obstacle sports community following the dissolution of the Fédération Internationale de Sports d’Obstacles (FISO/World Obstacle). The transition brought OCR, Ninja and Pentathlon obstacle communities under UIPM governance.Obstacle racing has also secured a place on sport’s biggest stage. At the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, a head-to-head obstacle discipline will replace equestrian riding in Modern Pentathlon and will be contested alongside fencing, swimming and laser run. It will mark the first appearance of obstacle racing in Olympic competition.For Chickcharney Challenge organizers, the international development adds another dimension to an activity Bahamians have been participating in locally for more than a decade.“
The Chickcharney Challenge started in 2015 simply because we wanted to create something different – an event that combined running, strength, adventure and the natural environment,” organizers said. “To now see obstacle racing developing into an internationally governed sport with a pathway reaching all the way to the Olympic Games shows just how far this type of competition has come.”
