Flight operations at Flamingo Air have been suspended following a fatal plane crash that occurred in North Andros on Independence Day.
Representatives of northern islands that were serviced by the airline spoke with ZNS News on Monday about the impact of the loss in service.
Member of Parliament for Bimini and the Berry Islands, Randy Rolle said he is working to identify alternative transportation options. He said, “a few of them are going through Nassau and then others are taking a charter. I think there’s one or two charter persons who fly out of Freeport into Bimini. However, you know that’s a little bit more expensive. I would have reached out to Western Air, I think Rexy Rolle, as well as Rex in reference to finding some solution. They told me to give them about 48 to 72 hours. And so, we stand by waiting for some update.”
We also spoke with Member of Parliament for Central and South Abaco, Bradley Fox Jr. who said charter and ferry services can help meet immediate demands. He said, “we have a myriad of charter companies right here in Abaco as well and I’m sure they’re using their heads to figure out how to deal with some of that traffic to get people back to Freeport.”
Former Parliamentarian Zhivargo Laing also weighed in on the tragic plane crash that killed the pilot and all nine passengers. He said, “to think about the families who have to contend with having lost their loved ones in that way, in particular, is devastating.”
Flamingo Airlines has disabled its website and announced that ticket holders can contact them concerning refunds from Monday, July 14th to Thursday, July 16th.
