Bahamas Union of Teachers President, Belinda Wilson has taken exception to learning of the government’s plans to hire 300 teachers from Ghana through a social media post by the Ghanaian foreign minister.
In a voice note released on Sunday Wilson said, “we’ve not been informed yet officially what subject areas, what grade levels, what schools, are the schools on the islands, are they in New Providence, are they in Grand Bahama or on the cays. What schools are you targeting? But a foreign affairs minister from Ghana some five thousand two hundred plus miles away from The Bahamas is informing The Bahamas about teachers coming to The Bahamas from Ghana. This is an affront to all of us because the government will have to provide round trip tickets for the teachers and their families, housing and rental allowances, a 10% gratuity at the end of each contract and more benefits.”
