The General Manager of Sanitation Services on the island of Grand Bahama is addressing the delay in garbage collection on the island.
Lou Carroll spoke to ZNS News about the issues the company has been experiencing with the shortage of vehicles and resources. He said, “the vehicle shortages that’s maybe the first step that creates this problem with us being unable to keep all of our trucks on the road. I’m sure that every resident has seen the garbage trucks have been late recently. That’s because well number one, our trucks are getting older, we don’t see that being corrected until maybe the middle of next year late next year because its just no trucks to buy.”
Carroll further explained, “we have a greater need for parts because we can’t replace the older trucks. Now, for the same reason, COVID how it impact factories and all that stuff and the two wars that’s going on now, especially the Russian-Ukrainian war, a lot of metals came out of those areas. A lot of metals that they use in these parts, so that slowed down for obvious reasons. And that means that parts that we usually could get within two days to a week sometimes now take us two months. As a matter of fact I’ve had part as much as ten months.”
The Sanitation Manager says he and his staff are working overtime to meet customer needs. “We’re trying to improvise wherever we can but robbing Peter to pay Paul well that’s not a situation you want to be in long term,” Carroll said.
Carroll guaranteed customers that their garbage will be collected but says that he cannot guarantee that it will be as timely as usual.
