Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Education and Technical and Vocational Training addressed the issue of school violence outside of the House Of Assembly on Wednesday. The latest incident was a stabbing on Tuesday involving three male school students, one was taken to hospital and the others were arrested by police.
The Hon. Glenys Hanna Martin told reporters, “I’m advised that the incident involved the alleged perpetrator was an eleventh grade student. The student that was stabbed is in stable condition and that’s the status thus far.”
“We’ve been trying very hard to secure campuses. Children are coming from diverse backgrounds with different challenges. They come all together on a school campus and we are working very hard to make it a harmonious, synergistic environment for young people,” Hanna Martin continued.
While addressing the House Of Assembly Hanna Martin spoke of the reintroduction of corporal punishment as a possible deterrent to the bad bahaviour of students. “But the issue of corporal punishment in schools, we need to revisit that and to see how is it that we could be causing young people to understand what is correct behaviours and whether we should use physical chastisement as a way of seeking to convince 15 and 16 year olds of how to behave.”
The teenagers arrested in connection with the stabbing incident are expected to be charged.
