Officials of the Ministry of Works and Family Island Affairs led by minister, the Hon. Clay Sweeting traveled to Long Island on Wednesday where they toured road and water works currently underway on the island.
Sweeting told reporters, ” we’re happy to see that the waterworks is well underway. I heard the contractor say earlier that persons were asking about extending, we can look at that. But we’re happy to know a contractor from Long Island is doing the work in Long Island.”
The government is paving more than 18 miles of road and providing water to the communities that need it at a cost of approximately $20 million. The work is being carried out by Rowdy Boy Construction.
Sweeting said, “this is the most infrastructural investment a government has put into Long Island in decades.”
Rowdy Boyd Chief Executive Officer, Henry Knowles spoke about some of the challenges that have arisen since the start of the project. He said, “we’re waiting on a generator right now. We get a generator which is new. There’s old technology again. We’re trying to stay away from all the electronics because we don’t have the personal to do that. The real challenge is getting the rock and the bitumen here because you know right now we have issues all over the world with the war and stuff. The boat coming here taking a lot of time. So what we decided to do, we got one load of bitumen board and we’re gonna take a second load with another company so if one falls through we’ll have the next one.”
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
