Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, the Hon. Myles Laroda commented on the issues of marital rape and gender based violence stating that he supports gender based violence legislation.

He said, “this touches every community and so its a very serious one, one that have to be addressed, its multifaceted.  On the issue of marital rape I think I am on the record, not only as an attorney but also as a father, as a son, as a husband.”

Laroda gave the example of a marriage where “husband and wife who are separated have been separated for twenty years, they live at different locations, they’re still legally married.  Should the husband be allowed to go and kick down the door of a woman that he’s still legally married to and force himself upon her.”

The Minister also says that while he understands the religious point of subsisting marriage between husband and wife there is a lot of evidence that point to instances where a husband can rape his wife.
