Minister of Health and Wellness, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville gave an update on the construction of the new health care complex while visiting the island of Grand Bahama.
Dr. Darville told reporters the first phase of construction will soon be complete. He said, “in the next month the residents of Grand Bahama can see an expedition of this particular project and we will now begin to bring more man power resources on the site now that we have has some addition drawing from the Beck Group. There was some headwinds but we’re behind that now and we anticipate turnkey for phase 1A and 1B here on the Freeport campus hopefully by the end of this year, early 2026.”
The completion of phases 1A and 1B will allow for the introduction of services like oncology on the island. “We be providing oncology services for cancer patients and also add additional services for the residents of Grand Bahama because the Rand Memorial Hospital is not a full hospital,” Dr. Darville said.
According to the minister discussions have commenced about the construction of the second phase of the facility which is a multi-story tower.
While on the island Dr. Darville also spoke at a heads of agreement signing between the government and the Western Atlantic University School of Medicine. He revealed the government’s intention for the 100 acre property where the school and the health care complex are located. He said, “our vision for these 100 acres of property in this area was to develop a medical school, medical training, a hospital, as well as institutes and biomedical companies who’ll be able to interface in this medical campus and to be able to provide quality health care services locally and abroad.”
