High Level Talks with Govt and UNHCR

The Prime Minister Philip E. Davis, Cabinet Ministers, and other high level government officials had candid and constructive discussions with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ (UNHCR’s) Deputy Representative to The United States and The Caribbean, Jon Hoisaeter and UNHCR’s Protection Officer for The Bahamas, Crispin Hall.

Discussions were held on issues related to management of asylum and migration challenges in the Bahamas, as well as on the legislative reform on nationality. In the context of climate change, they discussed lessons learnt from Hurricane Dorian and the need for further joint efforts to ensure that Bahamas has strong capacity and preparedness for future emergencies.

UNHCR reiterated its commitment to continue to work with the Government of the Bahamas to deal with current and future asylum challenges and develop solutions in line with to the 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol and on the basis of regional collaboration and solidarity.
