Former Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis launched his independent campaign for re-election on Saturday at his constituency headquarters on West Bay Street.
Dr. Minnis also served as leader of the Free National Movement (FNM) from 2012 to 2021. It was announced by the current FNM leader, Michael Pintard, in April 2025 that the party would not offer a nomination to Dr. Minnis.
Flanked by supporters Dr. Minnis told reporters that he intends to push for a committee to address healthcare. He said, “all I’m saying, establish a committee, a committee that comprise PLP, FNM, Independents, whatever, members of the health committee, the private sector and patients and you plot the way forward. That way the difficult decision can be made and you cannot use it as a political football.”
The former Prime Minister also defended his record as leader during the COVID pandemic. He said, “can you imagine a little small country like The Bahamas, the World Health Organization impressed with the management of The Bahamas, obviously, asked The Bahamas to review their protocols, that’s an honor for a small country. So Killarney knows m record and there are quite a number of programs we want to continue.”
Dr. Minnis also spoke about the tax free zones concessions offered in the over the hill communities during his administration. He said, “that program was working. There were development within the inner cities taking advantage of the tax free concessions that were given to them. There were even more employment being created, to be exact, there was 142 employees who had gotten job creation through this program.”
Among the supporters at the event were former Parliamentarians Branville McCartney and Renward Wells.
