Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Hon. Philip Davis commented on the government’s move to diversify trade this week. This comes in response to the ongoing trade war between the United States, China, Mexico and Canada.
Mr. Davis told reporters, “our response to that is to continue our efforts to continue to diversify the source from which we get our products and hopefully they can come direct to The Bahamas as opposed to going where it’ll cost us much more.”
At a press event held at the Office of the Prime Minister earlier this month CLX Logistics Bahamas Chief Executive, Cerri Howell explained the benefits of having direct trade routes. “With these direct trade routes we now shorten the time, so from farm to table and so we reach fresher goods in The Bahamas.”
As the United States continues to levy tariffs of imported goods and services. The Prime Minister said, “we’ll look at each policy of the United States, see how it impacts us and make the adjustments as necessary to ensure that we are looking after our people.”
In addition to the new trade initiatives the government is also encouraging local production.
