The Ministry of Health and Wellness in collaboration with the Healthy Bahamas Coalition held a seminar presenting an overview of alcohol use in The Bahamas, December 2, 2025 at the Harry C. Moore Library of the University of The Bahamas.
Held under the theme, ‘the Real Cost of Alcohol’ the seminar was aimed at college-aged students.
Dr. Monique Mitchell, Alcohol Subcommittee Lead, Healthy Bahamas Coalition, said the seminar is the first in a series they will be holding. Other seminars on alcohol will be aimed at the parents, under-aged persons and adults.
Dr. Mitchell said the seminar’s objective was to bring awareness to the problem of alcoholism and its possible effects on the consumer.
Attendees heard topics such as “under pressure”; the hidden impact of alcohol on the body; the mental toll of alcohol use; and beyond the headlines: Drinking and Driving.
Speakers included psychologists, members of the Royal Bahamas Police Force, and physicians. Dr. Philip Swann, chair of Healthy Bahamas Coalition gave the overview of alcohol use in The Bahamas, while other speakers addressed the specific aspects.
