There were 16 suicides recorded in 2025 along with 62 attempted suicides compared to 10 suicides and 48 attempts in 2024.
Minister of Health and Wellness, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville recently addressed the issue while speaking with reporters on the island of Abaco where multiple attempted suicides have been already been reported this year.
He said his ministry is training healthcare workers to identify warning signs for quicker intervention and support. “We’ve been working very closely with the psychological association. We’ve run many workshops here on Abaco and the work continues, not only on this island but throughout The Bahamas. And Dorian affected even Grand Bahama and we did not have the man power resources in our ministry complete so we partnered with the private sector. As we begin to roll out the new mental health act, it’s so robust and so big that we bringing it into force in stages. Always remember that early last year. We graduated some 41 mental health nurses, that are community based, who have the ability for community support, early detection and to address many of the chronic mental illnesses in the community in a more systematic and appropriate way. ”
