More affordable homes are on the way for residents of Central and South Abaco as the government makes progress in delivering more houses for more Bahamians.
Member of Parliament for Central and South Abaco, Bradley Fox Jr. spoke with ZNS News about the housing projects on the island. He said, “we are in the process right now of finishing off five homes that were transferred from the DRM (Disaster Risk Management Authority) to Ministry of Housing as well as four new construction, four new builds, coming out of the ground from the Ministry of Housing. So in the next couple of months I think we’ll have nine homes.”
Fox Jr. also revealed that he is in discussions with housing minister, the Hon. Keith Bell about the development of lots in Spring City. He said, “I live in Spring City. I’m a realtor. This isn’t something that I can run away from. So I’m gonna have to be accountable to my people and I’m gonna keep on him because this is a conversation we’re been having from, I want to say, 2023 or 2024. Way before any sort of political run about we do, maybe, would do a PPP (public private partnership).”
In the years following Hurricane Dorian many Abaco residents were unable to purchase land when prices were lower, land values are now rising. According to the Member of Parliament many people are interested in purchasing land have also inquired about crown land grants. “The crown lands inquired alone should signal that Abaconians want to own a piece of this rock and the economy is still strong. So as long as they’re able to get the financing to build something I think we’re gonna see the development.”
Fox is optimistic that within the next year there will be a housing development on the island.
