The Minister of Education and Technical and Vocational Training revealed the reduction in school incidents while contributing to the budget debate in the House of Assembly last week.
According to the Hon. Glenys Hanna Martin this reduction is due to the work of School Resource Officers (SRO). She said, “these SROs, the don’t just patrol the campus, they go in the classroom with students, they deliver presentations on issues that impact young people. They talk about guns, gangs, drugs, bullying and a host of other psycho social issues. I saw a video after the GSSSA sporting event. The SRO from C.H. Reeves, C. H. Reeves won the championship and those students surrounded him as he was dancing. But they were celebrating him and they won the championship. It spoke volumes about how this mentorship process is proceeding.”
The School Resource Officer Pilot Program was launched in 2022.
