Noted Attorney and former National Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party, Raynard Rigby is reflecting on the importance of majority rule ahead of the holiday celebrated on January 10th each year.
Rigby told ZNS News, “the gap in the poverty is still too wide. There are far too many Bahamians who are still struggling to put basic necessities on the table for their families. There are far too many Bahamians who are still stuck in poverty caused by a myriad of issues. And these are not complex problems for us given our smallness I think it demands and it requires our leaders, not just political leaders, all leaders, in all areas, our civic leaders, our church leaders, all of us as citizens to really begin to ask ourselves what can we do. What role can I play in making the country better.
Rigby added, “I think for those in my generation who were the real first benefactors of majority rule, me being born in 1969, it really meant that we grew up in a country that was so much different than our parents. That we had the benefit of free education all the way to tertiary education. We are in many instances are the first in our generation to go to university and to be in the professional class in our families. And so it really was a seminal event which brought about real transformational change in our country and led to the creation of really a middle class of Bahamians.”
