Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper recently visited the island of Bimini for the inaugural flight of American Airlines new service from Miami to Bimini. While there he provided an update on the construction at the South Bimini Airport.
The airport project is part of the Family Island Renaissance Initiative which aims to upgrade more than fourteen airports in the country. Cooper said, “This is progress. Infrastructure in important not just for the development of the economy and supporting tourism but again, also for the quality of life for residents here in Bimini.”
Director of Bimini Development Partners, Jeremy Ebbie told reporters the new facility will be five times larger that the former airport. It also informed that construction is between 50-60% complete.
Ebbie also shared some of the features that will be included in the new airport. He said, “you’re gonna see a modernized facility. As you see we’ve essentially one, met regulation requirements here to make this airport fully functional and one that now an American Airlines can fly into comfortably. You see the fire and safety provisions we’ve provided for this airport.”
Also on hand was Senator Randy Rolle who has been ratified by the Progressive Liberal Party to contest the Bimini and the Berry Islands seat in the next general election. He noted that he airport will mean a great deal to the island’s economy.
