The parents of 2 year old, Daniel Nixon, found unresponsive in bushes on Brice Lane in the Fox Hill area have been charged in relation to his death.

Douglas Nixon and his spouse Jenny were arraigned on charges of cruelty to children before Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans in the Magistrate’s Court.   The charge reads, “on Tuesday, November 14th while concerned together while having in your custody, charge and care, Daniel Nixon aged 2, did expose him in a manner causing him unnecessary suffering and injury to health.”

The Nixons have been in police custody since last Wednesday.

Representatives of the Rastafarian community were present at court in support of the Nixons who are also Rastafarians.  Chairman of the Ethiopia Africa Black International Congress, Priest Jevon Thompson took exception to comments made by Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander at a press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday where he spoke to the fitness of the Nixons as parents.  Thompson said, “we as Rastafarian, we believe in the infants being cared for, age protected, this is part of our Cree.  So its not a liberty that we mistreat children, that’s the next generation you know.”

The Nixons have been remanded to the Bahamas Department of Correctional Services until their next court appearance which is scheduled for this coming Wednesday.
