President of the Bahamas Industrial General Services Union (BIGSU), Doyle Russell is raising concerns about working conditions of industrial employees.
Russell told ZNS News, “citizens of the country has a stake and one of the stakes is that they are pensionable and permanent on jobs or that jobs pay them a pension.”
The Union is calling for insurance against industrial accidents, safer working conditions and coverage for casual workers.
Russell further stated, “we think that for too long now, this is the fiftieth year, and I think our people should begin to move up.”
Unionist Derron Brooks said, “it doesn’t leave Bahamians in a good position, you know, they don’t have job security, they can’t get a loan for the bank, they only get paid for when they work. There’s really nothing for them to look forward to.
The issue of casual workers has been addressed by Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis who has committed to addressing the issue through legislation.
