A ruling was handed down in the case between the two factions of the Valley Boys Junkanoo Group. The World Famous Valley Boys and The Valley Boys: The Way Forward groups had been embroiled in a court battle over use of The Valley Boys name and other intellectual property. It was announced on Tuesday that The Way Forward group led by Trevor Davis won the court case.
Way Forward Deputy Chairman, Jeff Moncur spoke with ZNS News about the ruling. He said, “we’ve been at this for more than a year now. The court, this morning, gave a ruling that said that we were the owners of The Valley Boys name. What that means for us is the group now can move ahead for this upcoming season. It’s been really, really rough over the past year. Of course, the affected sponsorship and everything else. I must really give kudos to all the group members they held strong through all this.”
The group now intends to apply to the Junkanoo Corporation New Providence (JCNP) for registration by its April 1st deadline. Moncur said, “firstly we promised when we started out on this journey that we would have fair and free elections. We ratified our constitution, I think about a month ago, come March 29th all positions are open for free and fair elections. So coming out of that we should have a new executive team and be ready to take on Bay Street. As it relates to the JCNP, as you know last year there was a lot of back and forth with the JCNP, we anticipate that this year things will go smoothly. Our plans is to do whatever it takes to be able to compete as an A category group on Bay Street come Boxing Day and New Year’s.”
The Deputy Chair encouraged unity saying that it was a perfect time for all Valley Boys to come back together.
