Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Michael Pintard called for the Ministry of National Security to rescind a letter of eviction sent to police officers occupying government housing on Grand Bahama over the weekend. The letter was issued by Commissioner of Police, Shanta Knowles.
Minister of National Security responded to Pintard in a statement saying that several officers has violated policy agreements concerning length of stay, among other infractions.
Director of the Police Staff Association, Corporal Areba Saunders spoke with ZNS News about the policy. She said, “the policy states that we have five years before we become domicile. In force terms domicile means that you have been working and residing on an island for more than five years.”
Corporal Saunders went further saying, “who isn’t exactly on year five has been there past five years.”
According to the Staff Association Director when an officer reaches the five year mark they are either transferred or they become responsible for their own living. “If they read the policy then they are aware of it but when they house you they inform you have these things as well.”
On whether the eviction notices are unfair to officers, Saunders said according to policy what the administration is doing is not wrong.
