The Ministry of Education and Technical and Vocational Training held an orientation ceremony for new teachers at the Grace Community Church on Wednesday.
Ministry officials including minister, the Hon. Glenys Hanna Martin were in attendance. Hanna-Martin addressed the new teachers saying, “we recently concluded industrial agreements with the three unions in the Ministry of Education. For teachers it has resulted in the increase in remuneration, unprecedented levels. Its not enough, its not enough, teachers need to be paid more in this country, but it is progress in the right direction. And I will be an advocate for the increase of salaries for teachers to appropriately remunerate teachers for the work that they do in this country. “
Also addressing those gathered was Acting Director of Education Dominique McCartney-Russell who said, “after twenty eight years of teaching I still love what I do. We get to shape a country. We get to impact lives. And I said to my team members yesterday, what you do in that classroom matters and you can be the difference between life and death for a student.”
The Ministry also hosted an administrators conclave on Monday at the Atlantis Resort. The 2023-2024 school year is set to begin on August 28th.
