The Bahamas Department of Corrections is moving forward with its plans to reform the institution. Minister of National Security, the Hon. Wayne Munroe says that officials are focused on preventing prison from becoming a school for criminals.

“We’re moving to seek to be accredited as a correctional institution. The concept of a correctional institution is to correct your behaviour. To correct the behaviour that brought you to the institution. And so we’re moving to improve the conditions so that you can’t have somebody with influence being able to recruit people because he can get them water because he can get them food, things that they should have anyway. That he can keep them safe, they should be safe anyway. These are the tools that were being used recruit people in our prison to street gangs.”

Munroe says that it is crucial to prepare prisoners for life after prison.
