The Bahamas Reef Environment Educational Foundation (BREEF) recently hosted a Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) Video Workshop, equipping young environmental advocates with the skills to tell impactful stories through video journalism. The workshop, designed to help participants prepare for the YRE
National Competition, brought together 20 students between the ages of 11 and 25 for an engaging and educational experience.
The day kicked off with an interactive session led by BREEF’s Education and Outreach Officer, Jasmond Collie who introduced the students to the critical threats facing the marine environment. Her informative session focused on climate change, habitat loss, overfishing, pollution, invasive species, and trade—factors that are significantly impacting The Bahamas’ delicate marine ecosystems.
To bring their learning to life, students were guided on an immersive tour of the rocky shore at Delaporte Beach, where they observed marine biodiversity, pollution, and invasive species firsthand. BREEF experts explained how climate change is affecting The Bahamas and the global environment, giving students a deeper understanding of the issues they would be reporting on.
