Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Hon. Philip Davis wrapped up the 2025-2026 budget debate in the House of Assembly on Thursday by highlighting the achievements of cabinet ministers. He also defended the fiscal policies of his administration.
Mr. Davis said, “this government, as I said, is confronting its obligations with clarity, courage and commitment and the people of The Bahamas deserve no less.”
The Prime Minister emphasized that this budget imposed no new taxes. “We’ve held the line because we know that families are still recovering and businesses are still finding their footing,” he said.
He also took the opportunity to address claims made by members of the opposition on VAT and the efficiency of tax authorities. Mr. Davis said, “our reforms are designed not to punish honest businesses but to strengthen the integrity of the VAT system and protect public finances from abuse.”
Mr. Davis challenged the opposition to look at the facts. “We say that the economy is improving. It’s not a matter of opinion, it’s a matter of fact. The surplus budget now before us is not just a projection but a direct reflection of the strength and growth of the Bahamian economy.”
The 2025-2026 budget ended with members examining each head line by line.
