Canada’s committed to contributing 1.2 million Canadian dollars or $950 thousand US dollars to support the Pan-American Health Organizations’ ongoing efforts against covid-19 in six Caribbean countries. The Bahamas is one of them; along with Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. The donations are to be used to acquire essential personal protection equipment, laboratory and medical equipment as well as supplies to be used by healthcare workers and hospitals.

It’s also aimed at helping to strengthen communication efforts around public health risks, continued promotion of protective measures and community engagement.

PAHO Director Carissa Etienne says the donation shows how we all can join forces to defeat the virus. Currently, some Caribbean countries are reporting a rise in covid-related deaths.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the government of Canada has donated over $8 million to support PAHO’s technical cooperation to tackle the covid-19 pandemic in the Americas.
