Commissioner of Police, Clayton Fernander appeared at a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on Thursday where he spoke about the state of crime in the country and the status of specific criminal cases.
Fernander showed video of a man being robbed while getting money from an automatic teller machine at a local bank allegedly by a repeat offender to bolster a point about keeping repeat criminals off the streets. “These are the same individuals who continue to get bail. As I said, we spend a lot of resources and man power trying to keep a lot of them alive. Although they are being monitored sometimes they intentionally let their monitors go down to get off the grid to commit a crime,” Fernander said.
The Commissioner added, “how much individuals you saw that breach their bail, we put back before the court and then two days later they are back out. Initially when they’re given back they say if you breach this your bail will automatically be revoked. But you’re finding that individuals are charged with that and they are back. Some of them even pay a fine and they’re back. So that’s the cycle, my brother and it will continue to happen it we don’t put a stop to it and some other agencies have to step up.”
When asked about the other agencies by reporters, Fernander said reporters should go find out for themselves. He said, “I don’t wish to get into that but y’all have to reach out to those other agencies the same way how you probe the Commissioner. Reach out to those agencies and put those same questions to them. I want to stay in my lane and we want to do what we’re supposed to do.”
Commissioner Fernander also spoke to a reduction in crime citing that murders are down compared to last year’s numbers. He attributed this to his crime plan for 2023.
