Former trade union leader, Nicole Martin received the instruments of appointment to the senate from Governor General, Her Excellency, the Most Hon. Dame Cynthia Pratt at a ceremony held at Government House on Monday.
Opposition Leader, Michael Pintard was in attendance and spoke highly of the new senator-designate. He said, “Nicole brings with her a lifetime of service, advocacy and leadership. She is someone who understands the dignity work because she has spent her life standing alongside and fighting for working people. She’s a good listener. And she’s listened to their concerns and fought for fairness, not from a distance but from within the communities that she has served.”
Martin expressed humility while speaking with reporters outside of the ceremony. She also addressed the length of her appointment with a general election set to take place this year. “I don’t believe that the brevity or longevity of your stay in a place is the barometer. So if this was an appointment for one day whatever comes before me, whatever is the most topical, most relevant issue is what I’m gonna give everything that I have to,” she said.
Martin replaces Maxine Seymour who announced her resignation from the senate last Thursday.
