Governor General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Cornelius Smith made his annual visit to the Princess Margaret Hospital this week.
A ceremony and luncheon was held to mark the occasion of the visit. The Governor General spoke at the event telling those at the gathering why he likes the annual visits. “This event provides me with the opportunity to visit with patients in your care so that I may personally wish them a speedy recovery. But more importantly, these visits afford me the opportunity to pay special tribute to the amazing men and women who comprise the Princess Margaret Hospital family. You perform medical miracles everyday but for which you receive very little consideration from the general public but I want to assure you today that the national is forever in your debt for the services that you perform in this institution on a daily basis.”
The Minister of Health and Wellness, the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville was also at the visit. The minister updated PMH staff on the progress of the renovations underway at that facility as well as the construction of new hospitals in the country. “I don’t want to announce where the location is yet because our engineers and our surveyors are doing the final geotechnical studies on the land. We believe the plot of land is a fifty acre plot and we intend to construct a state of the art hospital in two phases. The feasibility for this particular hospital is near completion and I believe that I’ll have the final report in my hand within two weeks to be submitted to the financial institution in attempt to get the necessary funding for the new state of the art hospital here in New Providence.”
