The Industrial Tribunal opened its new legal year on Tuesday with a special sitting.
In his comments Chief Justice Sir Ian Winder said, “there is presently before the Supreme Court Rules Committee the Industrial Tribunal Enforcement of Judgements Rules 2023. These rules will permit a successful litigant in a matter before the Tribunal to make an application in a prescribed form which is provided in the rules which will permit his Tribunal judgement to be seamlessly recognized as a judgement by the Supreme Court. The application would be heard on the papers that is without a formal hearing by a Registrar. And once all the boxes are ticked leave will be granted to the judgement creditor. It would then be up to the unsuccessful party to try and have that leave set aside on very limited grounds.”
Attorney General, Sen. Hon. Ryan Pinder spoke to the efficiency of the court through its use of artificial intelligence. “This has up to now been unheard of and it is most fitting that this new technology and its fruit of the successful collaboration with the Caribbean Agency of Justice Solutions would be embraced this historic year. It is hoped that this new AI tool will provide even greater efficiencies and automate core tribunal functions.”
The Industrial Tribunal has resolved 243 cases over the passed year. The court is now the first fully digitized legal facility in the region.
