One of the shantytowns scheduled for demolition this week caught fire over the weekend. Approximately seventy seven structures in the Kool Acres community were destroyed in the blaze.
Ministry of Works Buildings Control Officer, Craig Delancy was on the scene of the incident on Saturday where he spoke to reporters. He said, “from our estimate its about 80% been damaged from fire.” Delancy continued saying, “we were out here with the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force around 11 am this morning checking out the houses to ensure that persons has evacuated the homes since we’ve issued the notices for them to evacuate. We later got a call around 4 that the community in Cool Acres was on fire.”
Delancy said the cause of the fire will be investigated and that demolition of the shantytown is still on schedule.
