The Ministry of Education and Technical and Vocational Training has announced the reopening of the McLean’s Town school that was damaged by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019. Students from McLean’s Town and neighboring Sweeting’s Cay have had to attend school in Freeport.
Superintendent of Education for Grand Bahama Ivan Butler made the announcement. He said, “the Ministry of Education have heard the concerns of the residents of McLean’s Town, Sweeting’s Cay and the residents of east end Grand Bahama as it relates to those small children traversing to Freeport for school. So in an effort to assist those parents we are in the process of renovating the McLean’s Town Junior High School and it is anticipated that that school will be available for August or shortly thereafter.”
Butler went further stating, “we know that the residents have to travel for almost an hour and a half everyday back and forth and so of we can meet the needs providing quality education in that area then one, children don’t have to get up so early, two, they don’t have to travel so far.”
The superintendent expressed that a booklist, school uniform and a physical education kit those are secondary at this point.
