Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey released a statement on Monday on the cost of electricity on the island of Grand Bahama. Her comments came after Leader of the Opposition, the Hon. Michael Pintard voiced concern on the issue over the weekend.
The minister said the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) and the Grand Bahama Power Company should be made to answer for the electricity crisis being experienced. She said, “I stand with the people of Grand Bahama on the issue of the astronomical increase in power bill and the unreliability of power. The Grand Bahama Power Company and the Grand Bahama Port Authority must provide a full explanation to the people of Grand Bahama and GBPA out to get out of the way and allow URCA (Utilities Regulation & Competition Authority) to properly regulate power on Grand Bahama as they do the rest of the country. GBPA is not fit for purpose as the regulator in this modern environment and therefore they should allow URCA to do the job in the best interest of the Bahamian people.”
Moxey said she has always stood with the people of Grand Bahama as it relates to the unreliability and cost of electricity. She also said that she reflects the views of the government that URCA should regulate power on Grand Bahama.
