The Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Mario Bowleg announced that seed funding has been released to Grand Bahama Junkanoo groups for the upcoming New Year’s Day parade.
Bowleg told ZNS News on his last visit to Grand Bahama, “what we did for Grand Bahama, we put a national committee to help oversee the local junkanoo committee here on the island so that we can help lead and guide them on what they need to do in order to stand on their own two feet. And so the program is in place that we will help them for the next two years so that they can be as New Providence and some of the other family islands and be able to stand on their own two feet.”
The Minister also commented on the working relationship between his ministry and the Grand Bahama Junkanoo groups. “The Junkanoo groups are quite satisfied with the relationship between themselves and the ministry. And so, they’re just happy to be on, well I was told, again, by the Platinum Knights they’re just happy that I’m their minister, who supports Junkanoo to the fullest especially when it comes to Grand Bahama. And they’re looking forward to bright things to come in the future,” Bowleg said.
Bowleg disclosed that consideration is being given to changing the date of the Grand Bahama parade.
