The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. held its second annual speech competition for high school students at the University of The Bahamas on Wednesday focused on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students spoke on the topic ‘We Must Live Together As Brothers Or Perish Together As Fools’ in hopes of winning the top prize of $500.
Area Director Algernon Cargill spoke to ZNS News on the sidelines of the event. He said, “Dr. King was a freedom fighter. He was also a brother of Alphi Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and he lived his life trying to create equality. And Martin Luther King Jr., our esteemed brother, he believed not only in ensuring that there was equality but he believed in ensuring that there was parity in votes also. His struggles in Alabama, his struggles in Memphis, Tennessee, his struggles all around America was about advancing the cause of black people. And today, Majority Rule Day, is the day when women had the right to vote and we had some sort of equal parity.”
