The Cultural Affairs Division of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture (MOYSC) has launched its Mural Project to commemorate National Cultural Heritage Month in November and has kicked off the initiative at the Holmes Rock Junior High School.
Students at Holmes Rock Junior High were elated and proud to put their artistic handprint on a one-of-a-kind mural at the school and be part of history as the first school to be selected in the MOYSC’s Mural Project lineup.
The objective is to create a mural on a number of schools, community centres, landmarks and derelict homes throughout The Bahamas.
Minister for Grand Bahama the Hon. Ginger Moxey and Parliamentary Secretary Kingsley Smith joined the students at Holmes Rock Junior High on November 10, 2025 to mark the historic moment, just outside the school’s entrance wall, where they each placed their creative touch to produce the colourful masterpiece.
The painting, which is a depiction of the solar system with a Junkanoo pattern moving throughout the galaxy and an astronaut reaching for the planets, is intended to inspire life into the school and the communities at-large.
Minister Moxey applauded the Ministry for the initiative and for allowing the younger generation to become involved and lend their artistic flare to the painting.
“I think it’s a beautiful expression of art and it will capture the school’s spirit,” she said while adding that it is the home of the Rockets.
Minister Moxey noted that the painting is a wonderful depiction of art and culture for the students and the island.
“This is the beginning of these murals throughout The Bahamas. Right now, it’s on this school wall, but it’s going to be on various locations throughout the country. It just so happens that the Holmes Rock Junior high School that was just opened this September has been selected as the first one.”
Mr. Smith was also elated to be part of the historic occasion.
“It means a lot to me as the Member of Parliament to have our students. to have our community, take part in this historic event,” he said.
The Mural project is being led by the Cultural Affairs team in Grand Bahama, along with Cultural Officer Abby Smith of New Providence, who is in charge of the Visual Arts Program in The Bahamas.
