During a recent visit to Grand Bahama Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis provided an update on the Grand Lucayan Resort and Grand Bahama International Airport projects.
In May the government signed a heads of agreement with US developer Concord Wilshire for the redevelopment of the Grand Lucayan Resort. The deal has since been called into question by the Leader of the Opposition due to the lack of movement on the project.
Mr. Davis said, “first of all you’re dealing with a major project that’s about $1 billion. It’ll take time to get all the plans, designs and all the concepts complete but everything is on target for that redevelopment in Lucaya.”
The Prime Minister assured that the redevelopment of the Grand Bahama International Airport is also moving forward. He said, “we should be signing some contracts within the next two to three weeks.” This comes after an announcement by the Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper that funding had been reallocated from other airport projects in the country for the Grand Bahama project.
Mr. Davis also spoke of other projects in the pipeline for Grand Bahama. He said, “I don’t want to speak beforehand but there are several other major projects that we should be in a position to announce within the next month.”
When asked to elaborate on the new projects Mr. Davis said, “Hutchinson Whampoa Shipyard, the cruise port, the power company. I don’t want to say it all but there are some major announcements to be made relating to all those projects very shortly.”
Prime Minister Davis acknowledged that even with the projects underway there is more still work to be done on the island.
