A National Apprenticeship Program is on the drawing board as the government hopes to bolster the country’s workforce.
Executive Manager in the Ministry of Labour, Quinton Laroda spoke to ZNS News about the significance of the program. He said, “there is a specific definition for an apprentice. This is someone who is learning a skill, craft, a trade from a learned individual. Someone who would sign an apprenticeship contract. Someone who would do classes to get the theory. And also, of course, the practical and the actual work.”
The Apprenticeship Program aims to address the shortage of skilled labour in the country. ”We’re looking at those technical areas in particular construction, the maritime area is an area with a lot of potential and we’re quite excited about what can be done their with an apprenticeship program. And so we want across the board where young people are engaged in learning a skill or trade.”
For now, there is no date for the commencement of the program.
