The senate was in session on Monday debating a compendium of bills on the judiciary.
In her contribution to the debate Sen. Hon. Michela Barnett-Ellis said, “the amendment to the Supreme Court Act seeks to increase the number of Supreme Court judges by five. So we’re going from twenty to twenty five. Madam President, it almost appears though that this administration thinks that to solve crime and improve justice we just need more judges but Madam President we cannot be that shallow minded. These additional judges require more courtrooms, hire more clerks, more bailiffs, the court reporting unit needs to be expanded. Even though we have an electronic recording system transcripts still need to be transcribed. It recently took me over a year to get a transcript for a two day trial that happened last year.”
