The Minister of Works and Family Island Affairs, the Hon. Clay Sweeting has announced that demolitions of shantytowns in the country will begin shortly. Evictions notices were served on two shantytowns this week.
He told reporters, “they have a thirty day eviction order. So they have thirty days to clear out their belongings. In which time Social Services already has a plan to ensure that they are provided with assistance if needed and after thirty days you should see demolition in both towns.”
The Minister also stressed that this exercise is not targeted toward a specific group of people. He said, “for us we want to ensure that there’s not a specific target but because we do have some Bahamians living in these communities as well so that why we gat to ensure that we include social services and other aspects to ensure that persons that don’t have dwellings ensure that they are assisted in whichever way needed.”
