The sudden passing of the late Member of Parliament for West Grand Bahama and Bimini, the Hon. Obie Wilchcombe has presented the need for the holding of a by-election.

Registration for the election began Monday for residents of the constituency who are voting for the first time or transferring their registration. Administrator Leonard Dames gave an update on Tuesday saying, “Since we have open on yesterday there are several persons who have been coming in. A few came in last night and then throughout the course of today, this morning, we have quite a bit of persons who are coming in.”

Administrator Dames also outlined the registration process for first time voters. “We have to feel satisfied that they are a Bahamian. Secondly, they have to be eighteen years or older. Thirdly, the have to not be subject to any legal incapacities and finally, they have to be a resident in this community for over three months.”

Dames says that registrants must present a Bahamian passport or old voters card with supporting documents. He further stated, “they can bring a birth certificate if they have been born independence 1973, after 1973. They have to bring their mother’s birth certificate along with the passport or NIB card. Finally they can bring a naturalization card but that card has to be accompanied also by a birth certificate and a National Insurance card.”

The date for the by-election has not yet been announced.
