As the Trump administration continues to crackdown on illegal immigration Bahamians living in the United States are seeking to obtain Bahamian passports.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Fred Mitchell addressed the issue on Monday. He said, “you know that the rules changed in 1973 about who can get a Bahamian passport. And that means you have to show antecedence either through your mother or father depending on whether your married or whether you were born in The Bahamas, born within a marriage or in The Bahamas or whether you got your citizenship by descent.”
According to the Minister Bahamian living abroad have complained about the process of getting a passport. “We’re very particular about making sure that only Bahamians, as defined in law, get the passports. So people who are in this position have to exercise appropriate patience as we wade through all of the documentation which is necessary for this.”
