Prime Minister, the Hon. Philip Davis addressed the 2026 Grand Bahama Business Outlook event in Grand Bahama on Thursday.
During his presentation Mr. Davis spoke about the status and future of major projects on the island such as the redevelopment of the Grand Bahama International Airport (GBIA) and the Grand Lucayan Resort and electricity supply and cost.
While speaking about the memorandum of understanding signed between the government and Emera Inc. to explore the government acquiring Grand Bahama Power Company shares the Prime Minister stated some of the reasons the government is moving toward energy ownership in Grand Bahama. These include universal rates and the potential for more unified national energy planning.
Mr. Davis said. “I am not promising that your bills will be cut in half next month, we are promising path that moves this island from structurally higher rates to a fair national framework; from a fragmented system to an integrated one; from dependence on aging diesel units to a mix of LNG, solar and modern controls.”
On the work at GBIA the Prime Minister confirmed that work is moving forward with the Manchester Airport Group. He said, “their work already began in January. Their CEO and their transformation team are already engaged; a three-month mobilization plan is in train, and a detailed safety improvement plan is being implemented.”
The redevelopment of the Grand Lucayan Resort was also addressed. A heads of agreement was signed between the government and Concord Wilshire in 2025 to create a cruise ship area, 350 room hotel, 120 time share units, a marina and golf course.
Since the signing there have been questions about the status of the project and its remaining employees. Mr. Davis said, “the Bahamas Investment Authority, the Ministry of Finance, the Department of Labour and the Office of the Attorney General have been working to settle employees and vendors in a way that honours legal entitlements and protects public funds.”
Deputy Prime Minister, the Hon. Chester Cooper; Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Chester Moxey and Minister of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting, the Hon. Myles Laroda were also in attendance.
