The Bahamas and the global academic community have lost one of the greatest minds of our age, a champion of the liberating power of knowledge, Dr. Pandora Johnson, who has sadly passed on.
For almost half a century, Dr. Johnson poured her heart and intellect into enriching our higher learning community, working with a zest and passion that strengthened the foundation for the College of The Bahamas and its evolution to University of The Bahamas. She was the quintessential advocate for education, and her far-reaching contributions to academia—spanning education, research, and outreach—are deeply etched in the institution’s legacy and our nation.
As an educator, Dr. Johnson blazed a trail of excellence in both secondary and tertiary education, nurturing generations of students, particularly aspiring teachers. She was profoundly invested in their success and left an indelible mark on countless lives. She served with distinction as Coordinator of the UWI/COB Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Education; Vice President of Research, Planning and Development; Vice President of Outreach and interim Vice President of Academic Affairs. Her tireless efforts fostered an environment of progress and innovation, epitomizing the very essence of UB’s clarion call to knowledge, truth, and integrity.
In her final role at UB as the Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives Liaison, Dr. Johnson forged vital connections to advance the university’s teaching, research, and outreach agenda. Her vision and leadership were instrumental in securing funding for transformative projects such as the Harry C. Moore Library and Information Centre, and in informing the roadmap for the college’s historic transition to UB.
Dr. Johnson’s legacy will live on, not only in the halls of UB but in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her, learn from her, and work alongside her.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and the countless students whose lives she enriched. May we honour her memory by continuing the work she so passionately championed, and may her soul rest in eternal peace.
