Former Parliamentarian and noted physician Dr. Michael ‘Perry’ Gomez passed away over the weekend. He was 76 years old.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Chairman of the Progressive Liberal Party, the Hon. Fred Mitchell spoke to ZNS News about Gomez. He said, “as a doctor when it was unpopular and difficult to be part of the solution to the HIV and AIDS epidemic in The Bahamas and the world and the Caribbean region, he jumped in with both feet, sacrificed much of his practice in order to get on top of that issue in The Bahamas. He did pioneering work. He was honoured for that pioneering work across the Caribbean and across the world. He was a stellar intellect, a solid anglican. He’s the brother of our friend and Archbishop Gomez and he’ll just be missed for his great contribution to our Commonwealth of The Bahamas.”
Also remembering the late physician was Executive Chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas Picewell Forbes. “Dr. Gomez never got caught up in the court and press of politics and fabricating stories and misleading his people. He gave you the bare bone truth with that wry smile. What a decent son we lost today, honest to a fault. A national hero, a friend and a brother to the communities of Andros and the Berry Islands and by extension to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
Dr. Gomez served as the Minister of Health from 2012 to 2017.
