In a proud moment for youth development in The Bahamas, 43 newly certified youth leaders were honored at a graduation ceremony held on Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Christ the King Parish in Freeport. The ceremony marked the culmination of rigorous training and dedication, and underscored a growing movement to professionalize and elevate youth leadership across the country.
The Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Mario Bowleg, attended the Youth Leaders Certification Program Graduation and delivered an inspiring address celebrating the achievements of the graduates. He lauded the program as a cornerstone for national progress and emphasized the importance of investing in qualified, passionate individuals committed to uplifting Bahamian youth.
“This certification represents my Ministry’s commitment to establishing youth work as a respected profession,” said Minister Bowleg. “It cultivates a qualified group of leaders dedicated to guiding and empowering our nation’s young people.”
He acknowledged the diverse backgrounds of the graduates—some of whom are seasoned youth workers, while others are just beginning their journey—and praised their collective dedication.
“No matter where you started, your successful completion of this program reflects a deep commitment to excellence and to serving our young people with purpose and passion,” he added.
Minister Bowleg also paid heartfelt tribute to the selfless service often required of youth leaders, noting the long hours, personal sacrifices, and lack of recognition that frequently accompany the role.
“You spend your own money to support programs, provide meals, offer homework help, and give rides to those in need. Your vehicles become taxis, your hearts become homes. You stand in the gap for youth who may have no one else,” he said. “You have become mentors for the lost, advocates for the voiceless, and family to those deserted. To each of you, I say thank you.”
The keynote address was delivered by Mrs. Brennamae Cooper, Founder and Executive Director of Vessels of Purpose Elite and a 2023 graduate of the Youth Leadership Certification Programme (YLCP). Drawing from her own experience, she emphasized the broader impact of the initiative.
“YLCP is about structured leadership, emotional intelligence, and professional standards,” Mrs. Cooper said. “It aligns directly with the Bahamas National Youth Policy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. You are part of a much larger movement.”
The ceremony also highlighted the support and collaboration of key partner organizations, including the Red Cross Association, Boys’ Brigade Organization, and 18 other youth leadership groups, all of which continue to play vital roles in nurturing the next generation of Bahamian leaders.
As the event concluded, the room echoed with applause—not just in celebration of certificates received, but for the bright future these youth leaders are helping to build across Grand Bahama and the nation.
