Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation, the Hon. Chester Cooper along with other government officials were on hand over the weekend for American Airlines’ inaugural flight from Miami, Florida to Bimini.
At a ceremony marking the occasion, Cooper said, “Bimini truly is the gateway and Miami is a significant gateway for US travel to our islands and therefore today is about gateway meeting gateway.”
He continued stating, “Bimini has always done exceedingly well with ferries and sea planes with connections through Nassau and today we are expanding and complimenting the connectivity with the new American Airlines service to Bimini.”
The direct round trip flight, which begun on February 14th, is scheduled for every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. American Airlines Managing Director of Operation – Mexico, Central American, Canada & the Caribbean, Jose Maria Giraldo said, “from Miami, our largest hub, our customers can access more than 400 pick day departures to more than 170 destinations in 46 countries around the world.”
He also announced that this summer American Airlines will operate approximately 35 daily flights to The Bahamas which is a milestone for the carrier.
Member of Parliament for West Grand Bahama and Bimini, Kingsley Smith was also on hand. He told those gathered the new flight shows a massive injection of confidence in the Bimini economy and represents a direct line of opportunity for its people.
