Breeze Airways made its inaugural flight to the Lynden Pindling International Airport on Thursday. It was the first flight in the airline’s service between Nassau and Tampa, Florida.
Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Glenys Hanna Martin and Minister of Energy, Utilities and Aviation, the Hon. Jobeth Coleby-Davis were among the government officials who welcomed the 125 passengers that arrived on the plane.
Minister Coleby-Davis said, “it shows how the country and the economy is growing by the expansions that we’re seeing happen with the airlift and the need for us to continue to look at redevelopment and expansion for our international airport.”
Minister Hanna-Martin said the non-stop flight provides a low cost, high value travel experience for visitors. She said, “I’m advised that as soon as they were able to announce this flight the website showed an increase of 45% in interest in this route. So this tells us that we are possibly and hopefully sitting on a mountain of interest coming out of Tampa into New Providence. And we try to say to our people tourism is about how those who come from another place come and see who we are and what we are, to enjoy the spirit of our people, the beauty of our nation, our incredible culture, this is what tourism is about.”
Also on hand was Tampa International Airport Chief Operating Officer, John Tiliacos, a Bahamian national. He said that the new service is a proud moment for the country. He said, ” I know that Breeze has launched with two flights per week that will grow to four flights a week by next month. Hopefully we can convince Breeze to go daily. I’m looking forward to seeing this flight become very success.”
